Atlantis resident Percy de Leeuw shares his experiences as a chronic diabetic and how his life has changed for the better since completing the Eat Better South Africa programme.
Words: Percy De Leeuw
At the age of 50, I was diagnosed with diabetes and lived on medication, which later included insulin injections. As I became older it became so bad that I was forced to be in bed most of the time. I was exhausted and downcast. I really thought this was the end of the road for me as I succumbed to my illness and other complications. I had reached the point where I had even begun to finalise my will.
Being a chronic diabetic and hypertensive, I was very disturbed to be educated about this only now, almost at the point of death. My journey with the Eat Better South Africa Banting group started in 2015 and for six weeks I was a faithful student, as this was a sacrifice that was worth making for my health. It was not easy, but worth every step.
