On 2 March 2020, Tarryn Tomlinson, together with five others differently-abled individuals, joined to climb Kilimanjaro. By day three the group had reached base camp at 4 720m above sea level. They remained there for two days and after a total climb of five days, began their descent by vehicle. Tarryn says that although she thought about giving up, she kept going: Speaking to Daily Maverick, she commented, “Surrounded by snow and mountain peaks I felt overwhelmed with appreciation and pride. The beauty was incredible.”
Welcome to my story, shared with The Big Issue, a platform where issues are raised and tales of triumph, resilience, and overcoming barriers are celebrated. I’m honoured to share my incredible experience of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro as a wheelchair user. Life, much like a mountain, presents challenges that can seem insurmountable. For many persons with disabilities, accessing basic amenities, let alone embarking on adventurous expeditions, can feel like scaling a sheer cliff face. Yet, just as I conquered Kilimanjaro, I stand as living proof that with determination and support, the impossible becomes possible. From navigating inaccessible trails to overcoming doubts and societal barriers, every step was a testament to the strength of the human spirit. But with a dedicated team of guides, fellow climbers, and a supportive community rallying behind me, I dared to defy expectations and reach for the stars. One of the most profound lessons I learned on this journey is the power of collaboration. Just as I relied on my team to assist me in overcoming physical obstacles, so too do persons with disabilities rely on allies and advocates to dismantle the barriers that impede their full participation in society.
Together, we can pave the way for a more inclusive world where everyone can reach their highest aspirations. Beyond the physical challenges, climbing Kilimanjaro was a deeply transformative experience.
It taught me the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity, the beauty of embracing one’s vulnerabilities, and the joy of celebrating each small victory along the way. Every sunrise, every breathtaking vista, served as a reminder that the journey itself is as important as the destination. My hope is that my story inspires others to dream big and push beyond their comfort zones. Whether it’s conquering a personal goal, advocating for accessibility, or simply living life with unbridled passion, we all have our own mountains to climb.
And while the path may be steep and the terrain rugged, know that you are never alone in your ascent. Remember, true greatness lies not in the height of the mountain we climb, but in the depth of our courage and the strength of our collective resolve. May this magazine serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all who dare to defy the odds and reach for the summit, whatever it may be. Thank you for joining me on this extraordinary adventure.
