Since its establishment in 2022, the Salesian Institute Youth Projects’ (SIYP) Stitch Ahead Sewing Programme has been dedicated to empowering women from disadvantaged backgrounds with essential hand and machine sewing skills. The programme’s team is now thrilled to announce a significant milestone in its journey towards self-sustainability and community impact. Through its three-month basic sewing course, marginalised women have gained the skills and confidence to pursue financial independence through self-employment or formal employment.
The success stories emerging from the programme’s graduates serve as a testament to the transformative power of education and opportunity. The most recent development in SIYP’s programme marks a pivotal moment for the organisation. Thanks to the unwavering support of its legacy partner, the Waterfront Rotary Club, it has now reached a critical proof-of-concept stage for its micro-factory. This milestone represents a vital step forward in its mission to create a sustainable model that will foster growth and empowerment.
The micro-factory situated at the Salesian Institute Youth Projects facility in Green Point, plans to serve as a hub for potential employment and skill utilisation, employing graduates of the Stitch Ahead Programme on an ad-hoc basis. By undertaking contracts such as the recent collaboration with the Waterfront Rotary Club, this not only contributes to its teaching programme’s long-term sustainability but also provides valuable opportunities for economic advancement to its graduates.
The SIYP Stitch Ahead Sewing Programme extends its deepest gratitude to the Waterfront Rotary Club for their ongoing support and commitment to capacity development. Their collaboration has enabled it to secure its
first contract, producing 300 drawstring bags for their recent Waterfront Canal Swim. This partnership exemplifies the collective effort required to drive meaningful change and create a lasting impact within local communities.
Furthermore, SIYP would like to express its heartfelt appreciation to PSG Financial Services for their generous donation of industrial sewing machines, overlockers and irons. Their contribution has been instrumental in realising SIYP’s vision for the micro-factory, providing essential resources and training to ensure its success.
As SIYP embarks on this exciting new chapter, it extends an open invitation to Cape Town’s businesses and industries to consider using its micro-factory resources for smaller-sized sewing projects. Whether you want bespoke designs, small-scale production, or specialised craftsmanship, SIYP is committed to delivering high quality results while making a positive impact on the community.
“We are deeply grateful for the support and collaboration of our partners and supporters who have made this venture possible. Together, we are building a future where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to society.”
