Oudtshoorn born designer and entrepreneur Nathaniël Rabie recently started a passion project involving T-shirts branded with the names of local neighbourhoods, and it is taking off “like wildfire”.
WORDS: Nathaniël Rabie
My name is Nathaniël Rabie. I have been a qualified graphic designer for 21 years. I was born in the.small town of Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo region of the Western Cape. I’m an art lover and have always been inspired by art and artsy things.
As a kid I loved to draw for hours on end. Growing up, we had a spare bedroom that was our “art room” for some time. Goeie genade (good gracious), you could just go in there and draw for hours. It was lovely. My mom kept my art from kindergarten in one of those plastic duvet bags, and now I have a collection that’s 35 years old!
As a teenager I used to fantasise about Cape Town and the cranes in the harbour. If you lived in a small town you had to go and study at a technikon or university in Cape Town, Jo’burg or Port Elizabeth. Some even went to Bloemfontein, Pretoria or Durban. Much like the harbour crane that lifted the container into a vessel, you had to progress from a small town to the big city.
