St John’s legacy of compassion

St John, a registered non-profit organisation, has been providing affordable community health training and care to South African communities for 136 years.
St John has become synonymous with training and services in first aid, basic health and home care in South Africa for more than a century, having first opened its doors here in 1883. One of the organisation’s core values is that people’s lives matter. This value is upheld daily at the St John branch in Fish Hoek. The branch has been operating in the area since 1976.
“This charity survived all these years because we know the hierarchy of human lives in our societies and, therefore, we needed to intervene in order to assist the bottom part of our hierarchy, meaning the poorest of the poor,” says Saroj Rajoo, Centre Manager of St John in Fish Hoek.
SERVING COMMUNITIES
Dedicated to the teaching and practice of medical first aid, the volunteer organisation is geared towards developing young people while serving communities. “In South Africa, we train the youth in first aid and allow them to complete hands-on patient hours for community service. These hours are in the form of volunteer first aid work at events.
“The volunteers also engage in a magnitude of programmes that assist them in future life and develop them as independent young adults. All of this is done free of charge by dedicated volunteers,” explains Saroj.
