Join the food fight
Hunger is a widespread social evil in South Africa, but we can all do something about it over the next two weeks.
How? By taking part in the FoodBank SA (FBSA) food drive. The non-profit is partnering with Pick n Pay to raise donations and awareness ahead of World Food Day on October 16. Between October 5 and October 16, you are invited to donate any non-perishable food items to the cause, by dropping them into designated bins at Pick n Pay stores across Cape Town.
According to FBSA, a third of all food produced in South Africa goes to waste. And while statistics show that our country produces enough food for the entire population, 11 million people currently go hungry every day. To combat this, FBSA supports over 450 organisations – sourcing, collecting, sorting, storing and distributing surplus edible food to verified non-profit organisations – and offers meals for as little as R1,19.
“FoodBank South Africa provides food for over 110 000 hungry people,” says FBSA Fund Development Manager Kate Hamilton. “We’re calling on South Africans to partner with us and together we can reach even more people.”
