Once the tallest building in sub-Saharan Africa, the grain silo complex in the V&A Waterfront has stood empty for the better part of 20 years. Now, thanks to the vision of Jochen Zeitz and Thomas Heatherwick, this historic landmark has new reason to stand tall.
“Today is the most important launch moment that my studio has ever had – and we’ve been going for 23 years.” This is a statement from lead architect Thomas Heatherwick of renowned London-based architecture firm Heatherwick Studio, as he introduced us to the monumental space that is Zeitz MOCAA.
In fact, it is the first time that Thomas has laid eyes on the completed project since he was introduced to it in its fledgling stages more than 12 years ago. And it is more powerful in reality than even he could have imagined.
