It’s a Tuesday morning and I am driving in Beacon Valley, Mitchells Plain, one of the sprawling townships on the Cape Flats. I’m looking for a house where the body of an elderly lady was found the previous day. She had been murdered. Her body was found by her daughter, hidden under her bed in the Wendy house where she stayed.
The date is 30 October 2018. It’s around 8:15am and I have just dropped my daughter off at her Educare. My phone rings. A glance at the vibrating screen shows the number of a police officer I know. I answer, as this is not a man who would ordinarily call me, especially not this early in the morning.
There are no niceties. “Het jy gehoor?” “Wat?” I reply. “Pete is sat.” I laugh: “Moenie stront praat nie,” is my answer. “Geskiet, naby sy kids se skool. Bel jou mense.” The phone goes dead.
