Thermotrap Project
Informal dwellings are as much a part of the Cape landscape as Table Mountain. While they provide shelter, these makeshift homes can become hellishly hot or freezing cold. When it’s 35°C outside, ambient temperatures inside the shelter can soar to 47°C.
The Thermotrap can reduce inside temperatures by 3°C by attaching
durable white fabric to both sides of corrugated sheets. This deflects the sun’s rays to some degree and transforms the ridges into long cavities where air can be trapped to provide insulation.
