[dc]Two bicycle projects took place this year in order to assist townspeople with their daily needs.[/dc]

One of them enabled McGregor’s first ever mountain biking team, which will participate in Ride 2 Nowhere from 9 to 11 September.

In another, the African Scholars Fund donated 100 bicycles in the hope of changing 100 lives for the better, this time in Atlantis. The handover ceremony took place at Saxon Sea Secondary School in the town on 6 August.

The children were walking a long distance to school and the bicycles would provide both transport and recreation, said Eliza James, Director of African Scholars Fund. “Also, it is important that learners living on the “fringes of society” realize that they are worthy and that they matter,” she said.

In McGregor, an event was held in which R150 000 worth of tools and bicycles was handed over to the Breede Centre, an NGO in the town. WeChat, a free messaging and calling App, sent representatives to McGregor on 15 July to donate the equipment in the spirit of Mandela month.

The Breede Centre offers free training to community members in areas like woodwork, building, accounting, computer training, English classes, maths and cooking.
