Thabo Jamangile

Thabo (41) started selling The Big Issue magazine in 2018 from his pitch at the traffic lights near Checkers in Tyger Valley.

Before that, he gained experience working as a Hyster driver and a security officer.

“I have papers for security courses I took and would love to renew my driver’s licence. However, I can’t afford to do this at the moment, as all of my money goes towards taking care of my family,” he says.

“My first-born, Yamkele, just finished writing his matric exams and is waiting for the results; we’re hopeful he passes with flying colours. Three other children of mine are between high school and primary school age, and the youngest is a few months old.”

Thabo adds that he would appreciate finding more permanent work so he can save up some money to cover his kids’ stationery and school uniform costs. “In the meantime, I’d like to wish my customers the best and ask them to continue supporting The Big Issue”.
