Nosipho Quphula

Family First

Words: Alicia English

A few kilometres away from Willowbridge, Big Issue vendor Nosipho Quphula’s main motivation is to see her four children succeed in life.

Nosipho, whose pitch is at the Plattekloof Road and Olienhout Drive intersection in Panorama, started selling the magazine in 2013. Originally from Tsolo Nkwaleni location near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, the 36-year-old vendor shares an informal dwelling in Khayelitsha with her children Sisipho, Esethu, Liyanda and Esihle and it is from here that she braves the daily commute to her pitch.

Nosipho has experience as a cleaner and domestic worker and hopes to secure permanent employment to help provide for her children and pay for their education. “My family needs many things but for now we need help with building materials to extend my shack, as my family is bigger now. I would also like to send my eldest child, who has passed Grade 12, to college,” she explains.

We need your help

The Big Issue appeals to all public space and shopping mall owners, managers and operators in the greater Cape Metro area to allow our vendors to sell the magazines at their sites. It can be hazardous and physically exhausting to sell magazines at traffic light intersections. We would like to see more vendors selling the magazine in a safer environment. For more information, email our Managing Director Derek Carelse on md@bigissue.org.za.
