WE NEED YOUR HELP

Aphiwe would appreciate any donations in the form of materials to make macramé plant hangers; and school stationery, clothes and shoes for her children and siblings.

Nopinki Feni

Maternal instincts

Words: Alicia English

Big Issue vendor Nopinki Feni may not have a sufficient flow of income, but one thing she has in abundance is gratitude.

The 47-year-old vendor lives with her husband and three children in Khayelitsha. Her husband lost his job last year due to COVID-19 and now does casual work when he can find it. He continues to look for permanent employment. In the meantime, Nopinki supports her family how she knows best – by selling The Big Issue.

She first joined the organisation in 2009 then landed a job at GrandWest Casino as a cleaner. When her employment contract expired after three years, she returned to selling the magazine.

Nopinki, who sells The Big Issue from her pitch in Orange Street, hopes to land a permanent job again to provide for her family. She thanks her customers for their continued support and kindness.
