SHOOTING FROM THE HIP

If you could give your 16-year-old self any advice, what would it be?
Life is not easy. Make the most of every opportunity.

What’s the best part of your day?
Spending time with my family, and then bedtime is a close second. My day starts early so I enjoy a good night’s rest.

David Njove

David Njove describes himself as a family man. He’s happily married with five children  and three grandchildren.  He works hard to support his family, because he believes that one day they will support him. He started selling The Big Issue two years ago and has been doing so well that he’s our latest Vendor of the Month. He sat down with us to discuss how he manages to do it all.

I like to refer to myself as super-dad. I enjoy my family and spending time with them is really important to me. Before joining The Big Issue, I worked at a company that manufactured and sold paint. It was the best job I had ever had. I had been working there for seven years when the business fell on hard times and eventually closed down.

After losing my job I felt alone and scared. I didn’t have many skills and I had seen so many unemployed people
in the community. I didn’t want to be one of those people struggling to make it every month.

A friend told me about The Big Issue. I believe it was a godsend. I have been selling the magazine ever since. I enjoy selling because I am an extrovert. I enjoy meeting new people and I also like to talk.

The fact that I am doing this for my family is all the motivation I need. I am at my pitch at 07h00 in the morning and leave at 18h00 in the evening each day. I like to get home at a decent time, so that I can help my kids with their homework and spend a little time with them before bed.

I would like to thank all of my customers for their support. The money they give makes a huge difference to my life and the lives of my family.
