Captured by the lens
A handful of South Africa’s bravest press photographers brought our nation, and the world, the images that now form part of our history.
This year, 18 July marks what would have been Nelson Mandela’s centenary. We share this tribute, captured by South African photojournalists who were exposed to challenging and often violent situations to bring us our daily news.

In 1997, to celebrate the Blue Train’s multimillion-rand revamp, Mandela invited heads of state and celebrities aboard its maiden trip. The passage from Pretoria to Cape Town was followed by dinner at Genadendal, his presidential residence in Rondebosch. During a layover in Worcester, Mandela met visually impaired 13-year-old Willem Venter who reached out to identify his hero by touch. Photo by Benny Gool.
