Beyond the blaze

What do you do when everything you own goes up in flames, quite literally? The ever-present threat of losing everything in a fire is part of daily life in Cape Town’s Masiphumelele informal settlement.
An informal settlement is not the best place to live or enjoy your life. There is no livelihood really, and prayer is your only weapon against the evils of the day. If you aren’t the victim of a lack of service delivery, crime and substance abuse, you will most likely be affected by a shack fire, which can destroy the only place you call home.
