Adam Jacobs, our cycling writer, will take on a feat that will see him cycle approximately 35 000km around the perimeter of the African continent. Follow him as he prepares for his trip in April 2024 … Shaka mahala meaning ‘howzit!’
Howzit!! Taking in the last bit of winter in the mother city, by far my favourite season. Training in the rain is still, calm and somewhat entrancing, with few people around. We have done our first big day of filming which will make up the first YouTube video. Check it out @chasing_Adam …
Music has always been a major part of my life. While we were filming some clips, Zack – a masters student in media – asked me if there is an artistic aspect to the cycle and there absolutely is. A solo expedition of this magnitude requires a certain mental fortitude and in order to execute it successfully one must find a rhythm to flow to. It reminded me of my final matric oral I wrote. It unpacks life as a composition where one becomes the writer, and composer crafting a beautiful composition through the power of letting it be.
I am planning on leaving on my birthday, 16 April. The plan is to go as light as possible, with only the necessities; laptop, filming equipment, a tent, sleeping bag, clothing for harsh and chilled weather, satellite phone, a map, cooking utensils, maybe a small fishing rod, and last but not least my bike and a bit of sanity. The trip is not a holiday but an expedition into the vast African continent. It will be tough but I know it will be beautiful.
I’ll pass through over 30 countries, meandering up the east coast, along the North, across the Ivory Coast and down the west! The only country I won’t be going through is Somalia. The route will be re-evaluated 2 months before I leave, to make sure I have safe passage. Having google earth has been a great help in planning this route… but a part of me wants to hold back from knowing too much before I leave. I have been chatting to people that have embarked on many similar expeditions and the conversations have been enriching, insightful, and somewhat comforting. There are lots of unknowns going into something this big and as much as the mystery entices me, it also lingers like a devil on my shoulder.
Lastly, the “Chasing Adam” project is one that embodies the spirit of endurance sport and of story-telling. It is a project that bridges stories and tales across borders. It is the missing link of people told through the lens of a man on a bicycle. A friend of mine Luca is working tirelessly alongside me in crafting the story in an interesting way. We want to tell a story that is a raw representation of the importance of human connection, determination and perseverance. Everyone has their own melodies they dance along and mine is through endurance sport where I am forced to dine with my demons and dance along the clouds with angels.
If you would like to be involved in the project in any way, reach out to me via my socials or email. We are an eager bunch always looking to learn new things.
