Xoliswa Ntunta
“I started selling The Big Issue in 2002, having moved to the city. When I joined the organisation my eldest child was finishing university and I was struggling to pay the fees.
“The Big Issue staff chipped in and helped out because they understood that I had more than one mouth to feed and I was new to being an entrepreneur.
“The help didn’t end there. I received stationery, uniforms and other school requirements from The Big Issue customers and staff. Most of my children are working now; the youngest one is finishing school. I have had nothing but joy and feel gratitude towards my customers. They are of all ages and races and really love the magazine. They are great people and very supportive.”
Looking Back
“Over the years I’ve gained experience as a domestic worker. I also worked for a company that manufactured blinds. My last job before joining The Big Issue was in Stellenbosch. I worked at a place where we packed artificial flowers that sell to retail shops.
“It was quite a challenge adjusting to working for myself, but as time went by I mastered being an entrepreneur. I’ve gained the trust of my customers and sales are good. I look forward to growing my client base this year.
“I am excited about each new issue. I especially like the art stories, which I use as a selling point. I am always looking for opportunities to attract more customers.”
