Meeting Madiba’s typist

Humanitarian, champion for the disadvantaged, courageous and fearless are words that spring to mind when one thinks of Amy Thornton. But this is not how she wants to be regarded.

Her lifetime of work and dedication to the anti-apartheid struggle is an integral part of her existence – as is being the loving mother of four, and the doting grandmother of three.

As much as Amy wishes to fly under the radar, life won’t let her. The integrity with which she conducts her life – from friendships to work and community, has earned her untold respect and she is often invited to attend and speak at key events.

She does this with grace and refinement. But don’t be fooled by her soft exterior. When warranted, Amy tells it like it is, no holds barred. She’s not afraid to step on toes when it comes to injustices against humanity. A usually gentle Amy transforms into a rage-fuelled bulldozer, mowing down everything in her wake with her razor-sharp tongue. Suffice to say, no opponent is a match in the face of Amy’s eloquence.

A woman of many talents, Amy is also a master storyteller, remembering and describing with clarity the details of her life as a political activist. I’ve had the honour and privilege of working with and befriending this great lady over a decade ago.
