More than a quarter of a million of South Africans are estimated to be living with Lupus, yet “South Africans have no idea what this disease is all about and even the doctors need to get educated”, according to Lupus awareness campaigner Susan van der Walt, who was diagnosed with the auto-immunity disease in 2005.
