Crack-dealer-turned-filmmaker offers cautionary tale

Convicted crack dealer DeWayne Wilkerson would be in prison until 2015 if not for changes in Michigan’s controversial “mandatory minimum” laws. Instead he has made a film. 

“The Greatest Gift 2.0,” which Wilkerson, 42, began working on after his 2009 release, premiered recently and is booked for several other screenings in coming weeks.

Murder and threats can’t stop fight for gay rights in Uganda

In Uganda, like in many sub-Saharan African countries, same-sex relationships are illegal and punishable by incarceration in prison for up to 14 years, legislation that is supported by a majority of Ugandans and influenced by the lobbying efforts of U.S. evangelical churches. 

The law could soon become even more draconian under the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, also known as the “Kill the Gays” Bill, which was re-introduced in parliament in February of this year.

School holidays ‘art jam’ to open doors for elephant protection

Capetonian kids on school holidays are being invited to participate in a Paint-A-Thon with local celebrities to create awareness of the illegal ivory trade and raise funds for elephant protection.

The Paint-A-Thon is an initiative by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (Ifaw), which is teaming up with creative youth programme Artjamming for the two-day Paint-A-Thon, starting tomorrow (July 11) at Cavendish Square.
