Women vendors celebrate their
 strengths on special day
The Big Issue’s women’s group wowed bystanders with a special performance of their signature women’s rights play outside the Iziko National Museum on Women’s Day earlier this month.
The mini-performance by the women, dressed to impress in traditional outfits, formed part of a full day out to celebrate Women’s Day, which included a visit to the Iziko Museum.
The women’s group is a support forum for The Big Issue’s female vendors. Aside from acting as an informal support structure, the women take on projects to benefit members of the group, such as tending the food garden at the Wynberg depot.
Trudy Vlok, The Big Issue’s managing director, said the women’s day event was the perfect way to celebrate the strength and determination of the women in the group, who constantly seek to empower themselves with knowledge.
“The women’s group is all about mutual support, giving these ladies a voice and the dignity of independence. This outing was an oppor-tunity for The Big Issue to show its appreciation and pay tribute to its lady vendors who work so hard to take care of their families,” she said.
