Nine floats, 2 000 costumes, months of prep: CT Carnival set to wow spectators

The final tweaks, dance rehearsals and a frenzy of costume fittings are taking place this week ahead of Saturday’s Cape Town Carnival, which organisers promise will take spectators on a magical journey from “Cape to Cairo” with an ensemble of more than 2 000 participants.
Spectators at the annual event can expect to see floats galore, accompanied by street performers, belly-dancers, minstrels, contemporary and African traditional dancers and marching bands. (more…)

Biggest tea party in town

Cape Town’s collective of colourful creatives converged for a weekend of outdoor fun, absurd activities, quirky performances, live music and dress-up at The Flamjangled Tea Party. Now in its third year, the biggest tea party in Cape Town took place this weekend at the Contermanskloof farm in Durbanville. Talent shows, comedy and fancy dress competitions entertained the crowds in-between live music performed by Jeremy Loops & Co, Goodluck, the Nomadic Orchestra, Hot Water and Time Flies, to name but a few.

Financial speculation to blame for 555 million women going hungry

An astronomical 555 million women go hungry worldwide, according to estimates released March 8 by the World Development Movement to mark International Women’s Day.
An estimated 60% of the world’s 925 million hungry people are women, and 315 000 women die annually in childbirth due to lack of iron, according to the report. (more…)

Street papers offer empowering alternative to ‘Homeless Hotspots’

While technology specialists, brand experts and journalists debate the controversial “Homeless Hotspots” initiative of a global ad agency, the International Network of Street Papers (INSP), of which The Big Issue SA is a member, is pioneering a new digital project which proves that the street paper model is very much alive.
“We’re fighting homelessness by reinventing Street Newspapers”, tweeted global ad agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH) enthusiastically last week. But then they explained the details of the “reinvention”: 4G hotspots in the form of homeless people. (more…)

Cycle Tour veteran Mieke van Rensburg wanted to ride her 12th race for a cause this year and, as a long-time supporter of The Big Issue, she and a group of friends chose to ride for the NGO dressed as birds. (more…)

Privacy concerns mount over ANC proposal to make HIV/Aids a notifiable disease

The ANC has revived an old proposal to make HIV/Aids a notifiable disease, which would make it compulsory for doctors to report all cases of HIV/Aids to the Department of Health, as well as to the sexual partners of the patient.
The move has caused alarm, with critics fearing HIV/Aids patients’ right to privacy will be at risk and that they could be the victims of discrimination, or worse. (more…)

Equal Education drags ministers to court for six of the best

Equal Education (EE) is taking the fight against poor education and shoddy school infrastructure in South Africa to court.
The education lobby group this week lodged a case against Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan and nine provincial MECs in a bid to force them to deliver basic norms and standards in education at thousands of schools across the country. (more…)

Comic relief: comedians with a conscience come to Rape Crisis’ rescue

A handful of Cape Town’s top comedians and musicians have joined forces to raise money for a rape victims’ centre in crisis.
Comedy With a Conscience, held March 31 at the Baxter Theatre Concert Hall in Rondebosch, will feature big-name performers Marc Lottering, The Brothers Streep, Kurt Schoonraad, Anne Hirsch, Shimmy Isaacs and Marianne Thamm. (more…)
