Campaigners welcome UK banking giant’s move to stop food speculation

Barclays has announced that it will no longer speculate on food — a practice that’s been blamed for driving up food prices globally.

The announcement came following revelations that, while many in developing nations across the globe struggled to put food on the table due to soaring prices, the bank made an estimated £278 million (R3.7 billion) from food speculations in 2012, according to the World Development Movement (WDM). ‘Horsemeat tastier and healthier than beef’, rave French fans

In a dingy Parisian back street, diners at a one-of-a-kind bistro tuck lustily into breaded horse brain, pan fried heart of horse and broiled cheek, along with prime rump steaks the chef cuts from the bone himself. 

Seasoned aficionados queuing at one of the few horse butchers left in Paris say they prefer theirs raw as minced “tartare”, pepped up with olive oil, lemon juice and pepper. (read more…)

1 in 4 South African men rape: ‘time to tackle root cause of pandemic’

Rape is now a national pastime for South African men, with more than a quarter having raped at least once, while almost half of these men have raped twice or more.

This staggering statistic is according to research by South Africa’s Medical Research Council (MRC), which surveyed 1 738 men from all race and economic groups, as well as from both rural and urban areas. (read more…)
